You are thinking right now this is does not look like potato salad. Its not but its my version Portuguese style. Its delicious hot, room temperature and cold. This recipe has no mayo in it. Portuguese Style Potato Salad is totally gluten free, dairy free and vegan. I love it and I hope you like it to.

What makes them different?  Well, they’re potatoes that are kicked up a notch by adding in minced spicy red peppers, onions and spices. You can eat these Portuguese Style Potato Salad as a main dish, or serve them as a side to chicken, beef or roasted pork.

Ingredients to make Portuguese Style Potato Salad

  • 6 large russet potatoes cut into 2 inch chunks
  • 2 large sweet onions, sliced
  • 1/2 cup of olive oil
  • 1/3 cup of fresh parsley (or 2 tablespoons dried parsley)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon crushed hot red pepper sauce

How to make Portuguese Style Potato Salad

  1. Cut up the potatoes into 2 inch chunks. Add 3 cups of water in a pot and add salt to it. Boil the potatoes until soft. Drain the potatoes and submerge them in cold water for 10 minutes. Drain again and set aside
  2. Cut up your onions and the mince the garlic. Grab your post and pour the olive oil. Add the garlic, onions, herbs, seasonings and let it simmer till the onions are cooked. Keep stirring.
  3. About 1/2 way through sautéing the onion base add the crushed hot pepper sauce. Keep stirring and when the onions are cooked, turn it off and let it cool for 10 minutes before adding the potatoes.
  4. After the onion base has cooled, add the potatoes and gently stir it until its well incorporated.
  5. Taste to see if you need more salt or pepper and you are DONE!
  6. Ready to serve and enjoy.

Where can I get crushed hot peppers?

You can grab then at your local grocery store or you can make your own. There are a few you can use for this recipe. The one I used is called Gonsalves Hot Chopped Peppers, There are other ones that will work too with this recipe.

Substitute or Add

  • Don’t like spicy? omit the crushed hot pepper sauce. It will still taste great.
  • You can use dried parsley if you don’t have fresh parsley in hand.
  • To make this a dish a main meal? Add chopped or minced chourico (Portuguese sausage), chicken, pork or steak to it. It taste amazing!
  • To take the recipe the next level? Add corn, peas, chickpeas and/or even olives (the green ones of course).
