Orange chicken is normally made with the darker meat from a chicken. My recipe features chicken breast because that’s what I had in my refrigerator. I like using boneless skinless chicken thighs for this but you can use any kind of chicken for this recipe.

I AM ALSO SUBSTITUTING A FEW OF THE OTHER INGREDIENTS IN MY ORANGE CHICKEN. This recipe is made without adding sugar to it. I did fry my chicken with avocado oil. The biggest difference, in my opinion, between my recipe and the standard orange chicken recipe is in the orange itself.

In this recipe, I will be using Smucker’s Sugar Free Orange Marmalade . I bought mine at Shaw’s but I have seen them at Whole Foods. Here is link online on Amazon too.

How to marinate and bread the chicken?

Before you start, cut up your chicken into pieces than put the chicken in a large zip lock bag. Add 1/4 cup of liquid aminos (or soy sauce), white pepper and 1/4 cup of xanthan gum, psyllium husk (that’s what I used) or corn starch. You can also use gluten free flour. Shake the bag until the chicken is completely covered and let it sit for 5 minutes.

The liquid aminos I use is from Bragg and I got mine at my local Walmart. Here is is link for it HERE. It’s low in salt, gluten free and only 2 ingredients- Vegetable Protein From Soybeans And Purified Water.

How to Make Orange Chicken Sauce?

In a saucepan, grab all your ingredients except for xanthan gum and stir it after you fried the chicken. If it does not taste to orangey for you than add 2 tsp. of orange extract to your sauce. It will make a difference. Bring it to a boil and set it aside. When the chicken is done, put the pan back on stove top and stir in the xanthan gum. Keep stirring till the sauce has thicken. Its ready to pour over the chicken and pull it all together.

Sauce Ingredients:

  • Xanthan Gum – to thicken the sauce
  • Sesame oil
  • Liquid Aminos
  • Sugar Free Orange Marmalade
  • Rice Wine Vinegar
  • Minced garlic
  • Chicken broth

What to Serve with this Low Carb Orange Chicken?

Serve this over some asian veggies like steamed broccoli, red bell peppers, green beans, and mushrooms or keto cauliflower rice. I made a veggie stir fry of two kinds of cabbage, carrots, kale, peppers, mushrooms and onions.
