This recipe tastes just like something you’d order at a Chinese restaurant, but is super easy to make at home. Its definitely a favorite in our household.

Best Cut of Beef for the Beef and Broccoli

You don’t have to buy the most expensive cut of beef to get the best tasting beef and broccoli. In fact, you shouldn’t! The key here is to cut the beef into thin, equal pieces that will cook fast enough to not get tough. Save yourself some money and purchase any of the following budget cuts (ranked from cheapest to most expensive):

  • Flank: This cut is taken from the abdomen. It’s lean, easy to cut and perfect for grilling or sautéing.
  • Top Round Steak: Lean and flavorful, this thick come from the rump and hind legs. It’s also great for slow cooking and takes well to be tenderized.
  • Tri-Tip Steak: It’s lean and perfect for roasting and grilling.
  • New York Strip: Honestly, this steak might be too high-quality for this dish. But, if you want to be fancy, go for it! This cut tends to be well-marbled, pricier and is typically eaten in steak form.

Ingredients to make the Beef and Broccoli

  • Top round steak: use lean cuts of meat. You would want to use cuts that are meant for stir-frying. Use any you already have experience with.
  • Broccoli: best to use fresh broccoli, but you can use frozen or any other veggies of your choice.
  • Oil: we used avocado oil, but you may use sesame oil or any other oil.
  • Beef Stock: if you don’t have beef stock, you may use vegetable stock.
  • Soy-sauce: use low sodium soy-sauce or coconut amino
  • Sweet chili sauce: this can be found at most grocery stores.
  • Hot sauce: can be optional, but adds a great taste
  • Sesame oil: or any other nut oil, like ground nut oil
  • Ginger and Garlic powder: if you prefer to use fresh garlic and ginger that’s also fine.
  • Cornstarch: this will be needed to thicken up the sauce. You may use arrowroot powder. If you want to use plain flour, you can but the sauce won’t thicken up much.
  • Sesame seeds: used to garnish and can be optional.
  • Optional: any rice or noodles of your choice

How to make a Beef and Broccoli stir fry

  • Thinly slice the steak against the grain and cut the broccoli into bite-sized florets.
  • In a small bowl, whisk well all the stir fry sauce ingredients.
  • In a zip lock bag, add the sliced steak and add soy sauce, pepper, sesame oil and beef stock. Seal it and let it marinate for 15 minutes.
  • Discard the marinate and put the steak pieces in a bowl.
  • Heat half of the oil in a large frying pan or wok over medium-high heat. Add half of the beef in a single layer and cook undisturbed for 2 minutes, continue to stir fry for 2 minutes, more, or until the steak is just cooked.
  • Set aside and repeat with the remaining beef.
  • To the same preheated pan add the broccoli and stir fry for 2-3 minutes.
